Tom Turkey

Turkey crossing the street in the neighborhood…

In the neighborhood…

Driving around our neighborhood we often see groups of turkeys crossing the street or feeding on lawns. They are quite a sight! They are the largest bird I have ever seen outside a zoo. We always pull over and watch for a while. They don’t seem to mind unless we get too close. They generally go about their business of scratching and pecking at the grass.  I have only once seen one take to flight and it was an amazing awkward sight!

According to The Armchair Birder by John Yow it is in late fall that you are more likely to encounter groups of turkeys (mostly male) because they are currently shunned away from the females who are protecting the nests. Apparently Toms will destroy their own eggs!

Turkey Place Card

On your plate…

I have also made an easy printable activity page with turkey-place-cards for your Thanksgiving table. Print as many as you need, each page has four.  Click on this link to get the free printable pdf page – turkey place cards (it will take you to ANOTHER page where you must again click on the link to get to the pdf). This is a fun mini activity you can have your kids work on as you prepare for your family’s feast. Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. We get turkeys in our area too. There is one road in particular that I always ask to detour down in case we spot them.

Love the printable turkeys too! I will have to remember that one next year when my son is a little older. :) Cute idea.

  2. I love the turkeys! Except when traffic comes to a halt as they take 5 minutes to cross the road. :-)
I will be using your placemarkers tomorrow!!!
    Awesome! Thanks!

  3. AS USUAL OR MAYBE MORE THAN USUAL I LOVED THIS POST, THE POEM AND THE FREE TURKEY PLACE CARD PRINTOUTS. GREAT PRODUCT DESIGN. SAW IT TOO LATE SO I’LL SAVE AND USE THEM NEXT YEAR. THANKS.
