Listening to Mother Goose

Little Robin Redbreast
Sat upon a tree;
Up went Pussy-cat,
Down went he.

Down came Pussy-cat,
And away Robin ran;
Says little Robin Redbreast
“Catch me if you can.”

Little Robin Redbreast
Hopped upon a wall;
Pussy-cat jumped after him,
And almost got a fall.

Little Robin chirped and sang,
And what did Pussy say?
Pussy-cat said “Meow,”
and Robin flew away.

I think it’s nice for kids to know nursery rhymes, don’t you?  They are such a part of our culture but are being crowded out these days by lots of other great, newer things.  One, easy way to get to know them is to listen to them in the car.  We have this CD and have listened to it over and over!

It’s great to have a book version too.  I LOVE this one with illustrations by Salley Mavor (Little Robin Redbreast is not in this book).  If you are not familiar with Salley Mavor’s illustrations you should click on this link to take a peak at the sample pages.  She used fabric and embroidery to create the most magical scenes!

I think it’s hard to find the perfect collection of Nursery Rhymes.  You might love the illustrations but it might not have you favorite rhyme.  Do you have a favorite nursery rhyme and/or illustrated collection?  Please share!

  1. Simon received a nursery rhyme book as a gift, and I didn’t think it would appeal to him much since most of the rhymes are so old…but there is a reason these rhymes are still kicking around after all this time, because he loves the book! It is one that he requests be read to him over and over! His favorites are “ring around the rosy” and “pussy cat, pussy cat”.
