We have been feeding the birds and it is a lot of fun! Imagine that. You’d think we were the first people to ever come up with the idea! I bought a bag of mixed seeds this summer for making feeders. The feeders we made were from plastic bottles and we hung them in the trees. That was fun but then we forgot to refill them and the birds kind of ruined them by pecking through the plastic to get at the last of the seeds. Now we are just spreading out the seeds on the deck railing so we can watch the birds (and the squirrels) from our dining room. It is more fun because more birds come and we get a better view of them from the comfort of our heated home. I also cleaned the slider inside and out and the photos I took are nice and sharp! Here, take a look!
In addition to these we spotted one White-breasted Nuthatch, one wren (not sure what kind), a shy Tufted Titmouse, and a whole bunch of young robins who preferred the worms on on the ground to the seeds on the deck.
Mostly we observed lots of sharing. If one bird was at the snack-bar for a while and another landed close it would politely move along. We did see a few squabbles among the robins (maybe over a limited worm supply?) and one snacking squirrel who got a little too close to another and was chased away.
I also took some nice photos the day before of a few young goldfinches who were still mostly rust colored with just a little yellow on their bibs but unfortunately I lost them after downloading to my computer that then prompted crashed and died, forever. Ugh! Maybe they will be back. I have a new computer and more seeds!
