Egg Books

egg books

Today I am serving up some egg books!  This is the second egg themed post in very ambitious egg series where my goal is a dozen (of course!) egg themed entries in time for Easter!  So lets get right to business with some awesome egg books!

Starting with a new fun interactive and minimal egg book…

The Good Egg by Barney Saltzberg

Your little one can help the Good Egg follow commands by pulling tabs and lifting flaps in this fun, simple, and surprising book by the author of one of our favorite books, Beautiful Oops!

Humpty Dumpty by Jonas Sickler

I wanted to included Humpty Dumpty and this one looks intriguing!  In this texture and pattern rich paper cut illustrated version Humpty sits on The Great Wall of China.  This book is also made of a baby-proof material!

First the Egg by Laura Vaccarro Seeger

In this thoughtful Caldecott Honored book with simple yet painterly illustrations, die-cuts are used to make a series of transformations starting with an egg.

The Sun Egg by Elsa Beskow

Swedish author/illustrator Elsa Beskow created lots of magical little stories!  In this one you are invited along on the quest of an elf and her forest friends to uncover the mystery of this “egg”!  Another nice one by Elsa Beskow for Easter is Pelle’s New Suit!

Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss

If I ever need a favor, I now know who to ask!  This elephant can sure be counted on!  He sits on a egg for a bird who needs a break and perseveres through many challenges.

An Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni

This is a classic book richly illustrated in mixed media about friendship between a naive frog and a chicken?!

The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Leonard Weisgard

I love Golden Books.  They remind me so much of my childhood!  Here an egg book by the author of the classic Goodnight Moon.  In it, a lonely bunny impatiently wants an egg to hatch so he might have a friend but soon he falls asleep…

The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett

When all of duck’s friends lay eggs and she doesn’t she goes looking for and finds an unusual one to care for!  I like the effective use of flaps to animate the eggs hatching.  Spells by Emily Gravett is one of our favorite spooky reads!

The Easter Egg by Jan Brett

Follow along as this bunny looks for inspiration on how to decorate his egg.  He really wants to win the competition.  How will he do it?  The answer literally falls in his lap!

The Pinkish, Purplish, Bluish Egg by Bill Peet

Here’s one by the author/illustrator legend Bill Peet!  His illustrated autobiography is one of my favorites!  In this rhyming tale, an empty nester finds an egg in need.  It is a wonderful story of what it means to really be a mother.

Egg Drop by Mini Grey

Here’s a funny one about a very impatient egg that wants to fly even before it is hatched!

An Egg Is Quiet by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Sylvia Long

This nonfiction picture book is not only beautiful but highly informative about eggs and the many creatures that hatch them!

You know what is fun about egg stories?  With hatching, they have the element of surprise built in!
