Even though my kids are nine and seven we still enjoy concept books from time to time especially ones that are geared towards the picture book crowd.
HOME by Carson Ellis is an exquisitely illustrated tour of all kinds of homes. There are country homes and city homes. There are homes on wheels and homes that float. There are homes from history, fiction, and the future. The last home is the author/illustrator’s where she waves from her studio window.
Here is the trailer for HOME and Carson Ellis’ real home…
We all enjoyed choosing our favorites from this book and it sparked thoughtful discussion about our own home.
In addition to encouraging a discussion about houses and homes here is a very simple craft perfect for celebrating the concept of home and the start of summer vacation!
Easy House Craft
All you need is construction paper, scissors, a glue stick, and crayons or markers.
Cut several 3 X 9 inch strips in different colors. Fold strip in half then in thirds (this will give you a strip with 6-1.5 inch segments). Folding the segments into a simple house shape will help you determine where to add which details (the end segments overlap to create the floor). Then unfold and add details like roof shingles, doors, windows, plants, flowers, and evidence of fun summer activities! You can even add details to the inside which will be viewable from the open sides. Finally refold and glue in place.
If you are also a fan of concept books I shared a few more favorites this post: Beyond the Basics
