Dragon Book and Art

After a little break, Picture Book of the Day is back this time on Instagram and today is my turn to share.

I am also back from a Doodles and Jots break. I took on a product design project which was very challenging for me health wise plus family stuff and holiday stuff, time just got away from me!

I had a different book in mind to share today but changed my mind when last week I discovered this new Douglas Florian book about dragons at the library.

Dragon Art and Book

HOW TO DRAW A DRAGON written and illustrated by Douglas Florian is a fast and fun poem (in fact my eight and ten year old took turns reading) that will both inspire and inform artists of all ages to make dragon art. Each page has a different ENORMOUS dragon and neighborhood kid sketching them from life. You will learn about dragon anatomy while watching them do things you might expect and some you might not! When the dragons fly off at the end you will be itching to get out you art supplies and make your own magical creature!

The illustrations are classic Douglas Florian, mixed media on brown paper bags, a little child-like with lots of texture. I am a big fan of Douglas Florian’s art and poetry. I have shared his anthologies before in book lists here and here.

We use mixed media including tempera paint, permanent markers, and cray-pas on brown paper bags for our dragon art too. This book and art project turned out to be a great Saturday afternoon activity. We had lots of fun!
