Cardboard Dollhouse Inspiration

I hope you had a great summer. We sure did and spent most this hot sunny summer at the beach and in the water!

This Is My Dollhouse PBOTD Ann

Last week Picture Book of the Day started back up and today is my turn to share! I have selected THIS IS MY DOLLHOUSE written and illustrated by Giselle Potter because I love her illustrations and the theme of the book aligns so nicely with make your own fun, a major theme of my site! This book is about a young girl who builds a doll house. With cardboard, paint, and found objects she creates an inviting home for a diverse family of dolls and stuffed animals. The fun seems limitless as she adds more and more features. Then one day she plays with a friend who has a store bought dollhouse and family. While it is very nice it doesn’t turn out to be very much fun. Later she is self conscious to show the friend her handmade house but the feeling is quickly forgotten as the girls take the handmade dollhouse family on a fun safari adventure!

While I do personally think store bought dollhouses are pretty awesome I have to agree that when you combine creativity with play your imagination can take you anywhere!

Why not build your dream dollhouse?

On the inside of the book jacket are instructions for how to make the dollhouse that inspired this book. Unfortunately we couldn’t see the instructions so well since we read a library copy and the jacket was lined and taped closed. So here are the video instructions.

I always save unusual packaging items I think could come in handy for crafts and last year my daughter made the most amazing modular dollhouse out of tissue boxes and all my recyclable doodads! I did finally dismantle it during our most recent purge so I can’t share a picture but something tells me that after reading this book I should start saving those tissue boxes again!
