Mushroomy Fun

mushroom-picture-book

There are mushrooms galore outside these days thanks to all the rain we’ve had. Mushrooms seem to have a magical quality, the way they pop up out of nowhere and come in such a variety of strange shapes. I can’t help imagine little fairy tale creatures using them as stools and tables and shelters. All these mushrooms inspired me to pull out an old favorite from our library for today’s Picture Book of the Day.

MUSHROOM IN THE RAIN by Mirra Ginsburg illustrated by Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey, inspired by the mitten folktale, is about an ant who takes shelter from the rain beneath a small mushroom. The rain keeps coming and so do the forest creatures looking for shelter. The ant reluctantly lets each one join him under the mushroom including a rabbit! If you are familiar with the mitten you know that the last little creature squeezing into the mitten causes it to explode but this story has a different and very clever ending!

We love this story! Why not extend the fun by going on a mushroom hunt (don’t forget your camera!) or by having a mushroom feast! I was only able to find two varieties at our grocery store but it would be fun to saute up multiple types. Just add a little olive oil, salt, and pepper and they make a great side dish to steak or eggs.

If you are a fan of the mitten story check out my printable story telling puppets here and for more picture book picks with clever endings check out this list!

Mushrooms are fungi and unlike plants don’t need light to grow. Visit a mushroom farm to learn more about how they grow here and learn about very cool bioluminescent mushrooms here!
