Ducky

Here is the latest in my Animals Eating series…

merganser

These are Red-breasted Mergansers on a Cape Cod layover headed north for the summer.  The ones with the black heads are the males.  They were constantly diving below for fish!  I was a little too far away for video so enjoy my slideshow set to Brokenhearted by Karim (trying not to put anyone to sleep)…

Are you seeing migrating birds?  Please share!

Nesting

new osprey nest

I see this nest when I drop my daughter off at school in the morning.  I originally thought it was a crows nest because I first saw it in the fall and there were crows in it.  Now I know after a year and a half of making my drop that it is actually an Osprey nest and the Osprey evict the loitering crows every spring.  This grand spot is on top of an old school.  The school I went to in fact.  After years of being abandoned and neglected it is now under construction and being turned into apartments.  A couple weeks ago I noticed the nest was gone after a new roof appeared.   I was wondering what the Osprey would do and sure enough they rebuild!  That is their spot after all.

Can you spot the House Sparrows hanging out on the nest?  Are they groupies?

Mermaid’s Purse

I am counting this as number 8 in my egg post series!  Enjoy this fun little video (as promised) of mermaid’s purses which are the eggs of some sea creatures!. You can see the little fishy swimming inside!

We saw these at the Ocean Science Exhibit Center at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.  It is set to one of my son’s favorite songs.  Yellow Submarine by The Beatles.

Egg Anatomy Printable

Welcome to the seventh installment of my egg themed series.  I am more than halfway to my goal of a dozen egg posts!  And since I am over the hump I thought it might be good time for a recap.  My first egg post (when I conceive this whole silly notion) was an egg garland craft.  My second was egg picture books, next an illustrated coll-egg-tion, then came egg shaped Easter basket gift ideas, also egg inspired design, and yesterday was crayon egg decorating.  Wow!  That’s a lot of egg posts!  And now after all that eggy fun I thought it might be time to step back and learn a little bit about this so called egg.  So let’s get crackin!   Continue reading

Picture Book Biographies: Naturalists

naturalist picture books

We read a great book last night.  My kids love sea animals and I love biographies so when I saw “Life in the Ocean” on display at the library I grabbed it.  As is often the case with books I pick, my kids has no interest especially after seeing the high word count and as is ALWAYS the case I hooked them on the first page.  I’m the best!   Continue reading

Visitors from the Boreal Forest

White-winged Crossbill Winter Sighting on Cape Cod

I promise to get back to my Florida posts very soon but first I wanted to tell you about some winter visitors….

white-winged crossbill

I was driving down my street yesterday when I saw a bunch of birds on a couple of lawns.  From a distance I thought they were cowbirds and starlings which I have been seeing a lot lately foraging on the ground in medium flocks but when I got closer I saw that about half of them were red and some were yellowish.  I turned my car around to try and get some pictures.  My neighbors must think I’m a little strange!   Continue reading
