It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! Beach Edition
Jots about the bird…
- Barn Swallows seem to really like the beach.
- Watch one take a mid-migratory sip here.
- They used to build their mud nests in caves, now mostly on man-made structures.
- A male may kill another’s babies in an attempt to break-up a mated pair.
- When it flies, I think it looks like a mini fighter jet.
Finch Follow-up
I spent some time yesterday catching up with the House Finch family. Admittedly I haven’t been following my baby finch’s progress as closely as I wanted to. And let me tell you, if human babies grow fast, baby birds grow at lightning speed! Plus I discovered something kind of big…
It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! not-technically edition
Jots about the bird…
- It’s an Eastern Towhee.
- I identified it at All About Birds using the “similar species” feature.
- I thought it was a small robin when I first saw it.
- It spends lots of time noisily foraging in thicket.
- Cow birds often lay eggs in towhee nests; Towhees have trouble distinguishing there own eggs and will then raise the young Cow birds!
Jots about the plane…
- It’s not a plane (planes have fixed wings)!
- It appears to be a military helicopter and it was LOUD!
- I like these classic wooden propeller toys.
- You can make one from paper with these instructions.
- I wonder what this helicopter was up to…

If we could fly…
Instead of a stroll you might choose to go for a evening glide.
Sports would be different, for example basketball would probably be deemed too easy.
We might choose to have our doors on our roofs.
Roof decks would likely be a lot more popular;
as would tree houses and skyscrapers
(where each apartment could have its own entrance).
Fashion would be a little different to accommodate our wings.
We wouldn’t need foot bridges, stairs, or ladders.
Kids would have an additional milestone to reach.
Flying cars would probably already exist as would the flying equivalent of bicycles.
