Multi-age Play Ideas

multi-age play

My older kids don’t always include the baby in their play. There are just some activities that are not very baby friendly. They go in their room and shut the door.  What do they do in there?  Lately the have been coloring, playing board games, and having “book club”. Usually it is fine for the baby too because she has things that she likes to do that they don’t, like trying on everyone’s shoes, getting into the cabinets, or pulling books out of the bookshelf. My favorite though is when they all come together and play!

Here are some of the activities I have observed my multi-age kids (7, 5, and 1.5) enjoy together.   Continue reading

Red Grass

colorful-lawns

I wonder if there is any actual grass in our yard. Ever couple weeks my lawn becomes a different type of weed. It is even more obvious by comparison now that I have a patch of actual grass in the back corner that I planted last fall.  If I think about it I want to do something about it so I try not to think about it.  Plus it’s not the worst lawn in the neighborhood.   Continue reading

I Like Dolls

Dolls that come to life book list

I hope nobody I knew drove by while I was taking this picture!

I like dolls.  There I said it and I am not ashamed to admit it!  I like old dolls, new dolls, plastic, ceramic, wood, and fabric dolls.  I think I like them because dress up is fun and because they are vehicles of imagination.

My favorite doll as a child was a German doll we named Lorelei that I took everywhere and when I got a little older I had a doll house.  That doll house was so grand it made me feel so special!  Now I have a box with several small dolls I have collected over the years and once in a while, when I am trying to organized my things, I happen upon it and have fun looking.  My two favorites are a wooden doll that came with a pattern to make her dress and a reissue of fashion designer Barbie (she even had a portfolio with drawings in it).

Summer Home

Decisions (marker on notebook paper)

I know what you are saying.  Why would a family that lives on Cape Cod need a summer home?  Well, we love the beach just as much as anybody, but sometimes the summer crowds can be a bit much and it would be great to have a place to get away.  A quiet retreat.

We have been looking for a while and have narrowed to two possibilities and I was hoping the Doodles and Jots readers could help us make our final decision…

Look What I Found…

Okay, so sometimes when I take pictures I don’t notice things until after I upload them to my computer.  Like one day I took some pictures of a forsythia bush and when I enlarge them I noticed three large ants, each in their own bloom, having a snack.

It was misting all day today and everything was beautifully green and dewy and I thought it would be cool to take some close-ups of water droplets.  So pretty, right?!  Well check out what I discovered this time… Continue reading

If we could fly…

shadow puppet

Instead of a stroll you might choose to go for a evening glide.
Sports would be different, for example basketball would probably be deemed too easy.
We might choose to have our doors on our roofs.
Roof decks would likely be a lot more popular;
as would tree houses and skyscrapers
(where each apartment could have its own entrance).
Fashion would be a little different to accommodate our wings.
We wouldn’t need foot bridges, stairs, or ladders.
Kids would have an additional milestone to reach.
Flying cars would probably already exist as would the flying equivalent of bicycles.

Imagination

Books that celebration imagination

You know that universal parenting tale about giving a child a gift and how they will ignore the gift and reach for the box?

It has never really been true in my house even when my 6 and 4 year old were younger.  Don’t get me wrong, they like the boxes too.   Continue reading
